How to actually implement minimalism into your style? Minimalism is a way of living and once you fall in love with it, you wonder how come you haven’t started implementing it into your lifestyle sooner. It is by following a few simple rules that you learn how to let go of the clutter in every aspect of your life and your wardrobe makes no exception.
We’ve all been there at some point of our lives – hopping on every trend, tons of different clothes, yet nothing to wear. Not to even mention the amount of time it takes to organise your wardrobe, ugh! And, on top of that, when you become a mom, the time to actually do anything at all is totally cut!
I know all about it! I’ve been there and I know how you start feeling suffocated by the daily chores. If this is you now, don’t think about it twice – minimalism is a lifesaver! So, let’s get started on how to actually implement minimalism into your style in 3 simple steps!
STEP 1 – CREATE SOME SPACE!
That’s right. We need some room. More space – to breathe and to actually be able to keep everything in order from now on, once we organise it.
How to do that?! By letting go of the clutter!
You know how you’ve got that pair of jeans that you don’t even remember where you’ve put and you always tell yourself that you’ll wear sometimes, but never do? Or that skirt that you find a little too tight cause it’s old but you’re sentimental about it and just won’t let go of it, so you put it at the back of your wardrobe? Just to… be there, knowing you’ll never wear it again.
Be honest with yourself. These are the clothes you need to let go of first. Start small if it’s overwhelming, but just start. You’ll thank yourself when you’re done, I promise!
You can go two ways while starting to declutter – either dedicate a whole day to do that as a main priority, or if you simply don’t have that much time available – I have a hack for you how to do it one step at a time!
DEDICATE A WHOLE DAY TO DECLUTTER
If you’re dedicating the time to do it all in one day, I’m already proud of you! You’ll see how after you’ve finished you will feel somehow lighter and relieved. You’re intentionally making room for new energy. To live the minimalist lifestyle!
First thing you need to do here is take all of your clothes out of your wardrobeand put them somewhere you can see them (like on your bed, etc.). Then sort them.
Make a pile for things you love and want to keep for sure and a pile for the ones you’re ready to let go of.
Now it’s time for a little fashion show! You heard right! It’s time to try E-V-R-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G! Your clothes are not only how they look, but also how they fit… how they make you feel about yourself. So put on everything you’ve taken out and see how it makes you feel.
Is it an immediate YES, or more like Meh.. Maybe…?
If there is the slightest insecurity, just let go of it. We need only what makes you feel a 100% like the queen that you are! Nothing less than that! You’ll make yourself the biggest favour.
Everything that you chose to keep sort in an aesthetically pleasing way, having colour coordination in mind.
That way it will be super easy to know what belongs where and to effortlessly put outfits together.
If you cannot dedicate a whole day to get things done, here’s a tip on
HOW TO DECLUTTER ONE STEP AT A TIME
Not enough free time – no problem! You can still start and do it over time. I’ll share how. Put a basket or an organiser somewhere in your wardrobe. Every time it’s time to get dressed and you put something on, if it doesn’t feel right, ask yourself this question – ‘’Will I wear this in the next 3 moths for sure? Do I like it on me?’’
If the answer is No, just put it in the basket and say goodbye to that outfit.
Whenever the basket / organiser gets full, just empty it by setting those clothes aside and put it back in to fill it again with time. Repeat those steps until you feel there’s nothing more you want to let go of or until you have the time to finish it all in a day.
STEP 2 – SO, WHAT’S NEXT?!
Next, you’ll want to figure out what to do with the clothes you no longer wish to keep, right?
If simply throwing them away doesn’t work for you, because they still look pretty good, you can do some of the following:
- Sell them online and make a bit of cash! Yep, you can totally do that. You can try Facebook’s Marketplace or an app for pre-loved fashion like Vinted. It’s super easy, will prolong the life of your outfits and will make you some money. What a bargain!
- Give them to a charity organisation near you. Just make sure everything is nice and clean and that the clothes are in a good overall condition.
- Take them to a shop like H&M for example where they will take your old pieces for recycling and will give you a discount for shopping new clothes with them in exchange for that. That’s a quite good deal as well, especially if the condition of the clothes is not that good anymore.
- You can also combine some of the mentioned ideas above and just do what suits you best!
STEP 3 – AFTER YOU’RE DONE WITH DECLUTTERING
Here’s a nice idea on how to move forward with your journey of how to actually implement minimalism into your style:
A popular and quite well working minimalist rule in fashion is 1 in – 1 out. But what does that mean, you might ask?!
It means that whenever you buy something new, something old must go away. This way you will prevent future decluttering and will always maintain order and space in your wardrobe for something new.
Another great rule is to start making more conscious fashion choices.
This means to pay more attention to materials, having sustainability in mind when choosing outfits. Sustainable fashion is the future. That choice means you will have great quality staples to wear with years! Something that’s not possible if you’re only shopping from ‘fast fashion’ brands that are not famous with their effort to put quality first.
But don’t worry about that! I’ll help you and guide you with your choices going forward in the next articles, so you can get inspired and find good quality brands that can become your new ‘go-to’.
Now don’t waste any more time wondering – you already know the most important steps you need to follow in order to actually implement minimalism into your style. You just have to start!
